Abstract
Oral discourse (“Kalam”) skills among university students constitute a crucial foundation for academic success, professional readiness, and effective global communication. Developing these skills, however, poses significant pedagogical and institutional challenges. Many students struggle with linguistic accuracy, limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and insufficient exposure to authentic communicative contexts. Furthermore, traditional teaching methods often prioritize written proficiency over oral competence, leaving students unprepared for real-world discourse demands. Despite these challenges, there are considerable opportunities to enhance Kalam proficiency through learner-centered instruction, integration of technology, and intercultural communication training. Recent studies emphasize the importance of interactive learning environments, task-based activities, and feedback-rich assessments in improving students’ oral fluency and discourse coherence. Universities can play a pivotal role by embedding communicative approaches into curricula, fostering collaborative learning, and encouraging participation in academic discussions and public speaking forums. This article explores both theoretical perspectives and empirical findings to propose strategic recommendations for strengthening oral discourse competence in higher education settings and guiding future research directions.
